SHENZHEN—Huawei international media affairs chief Scott Sykes has departed the Chinese technology company.

Sykes joined Huawei in early 2012 from Alcatel-Lucent and effectively operated as the company's chief public relations executive after the departure of Ross Gan

It is understood that Sykes is to return to the US, after spending almost a decade in Asia. In addition to his stints at Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent, Sykes also spent three years at Weber Shandwick in China.

Sykes played a prominent role in Huawei's efforts to shift perceptions among the international media, in the face of cyber-security concerns.

A Huawei spokesman confirmed Sykes' departure, citing "personal reasons."

"During his tenure, Scott successfully led his team to strengthen the company’s relationships and communication efforts with international media and other stakeholders," said the spokesman. "We are extremely appreciative for his contributions to the company and wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Sykes did not respond to request for comment.
