BERLIN--Germany's governing political party has called in WPP communications agency Blumberry to lead its 2013 national election campaign.

The Christian Democrats (CDU), led by chanceller Angela Merkel, have enlisted Blumberry to develop a "modern election campaign", in the words of the party's secretary-general, Herman Gröhe.

Blumberry was launched last year by WPP's German holding company Commarco. The comms firm is led by Lutz Meyer, who previously headed Commarco sister agency Scholz & Friends Agenda.

Blumberry is charged with developing the campaign's narrative concept with the CDU. The firm will also handle the party's promotional presence, video and audio, digital comms and all marketing collateral .

The federal election is due to take place in eight months time, with the popular Merkel favoured to win a third term, despite the CDU's surprise setback in state elections in Lower Saxony.

“A creative and up-to-date campaign for the governing party CDU – there is hardly any more exciting task for an ambitious communications agency,” said Meyer.

WPP acquired  Commarco in 2011.
