SAN FRANCISCO — Mattel’s executive vice-president of global communications, Dena Cook, is moving on from the role to join investment firm Reinvent Capital, PRovoke Media has learned.
When she starts the role on September 2, Cook will become a partner and chief communications officer at the firm, a fund based in New York and San Francisco that invests in technology companies and lists SpaceX among those it is working with.
Reinvent Capital was set up in 2019 by entrepreneur Mark Pincus, known as the founder of pioneering mobile social gaming company Zynga in 2007; he was also a founding investor in Napster, Facebook, Snapshat, Xiomi and Twitter.
Cook and Pincus worked together previously when she was CEO of Los Angeles media relations agency Brew and Zynga was a client.
The move comes only 18 months after Cook joined Mattel, where she oversaw corporate, brand, executive and internal communications. She had previously led Brew for 14 years –including through its acquisition by Freuds in 2016.
Before that, Cook was an SVP at Zeno Group. She also worked at Fleishman-Hillard, Golin and MSL, after starting her career in-house at Sanofi and French luxury goods maker Lalique.
Reinvent Capital has so far been almost silent in terms of its comms; Cook’s hire is likely to signal a greater willingness to talk about its work. The other two partners in the firm are Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and former PayPal CCO, and hedge fund manager Michael Thompson.
