NEW YORK — Finn Partners managing partner Jodi Brooks passed away Friday after a three-year battle with brain cancer.
“Just over three years ago, Jodi was diagnosed with brain cancer and was undergoing treatment. She was fully engaged with her treatment in New York and then in North Carolina and continued to work full time until a few months ago. She was determined to continue to contribute to the success of Finn Partners even with her illness progressing,” founding managing partner and CEO Peter Finn wrote in a memo to staff.
“A few months ago, Jodi’s doctors told her that they had done everything they could medically. At that point, she decided to spend her remaining days with her husband Sam and their son, Jonah. They, her family and friends — many at FINN — mourn her loss,” Finn wrote.
Brooks, who was 48, joined Finn in May 2018 as managing partner and global technology practice lead from Burson-Marsteller, where she served as chair of that firm’s US tech practice. Roughly two years later, Brooks decided to focus her efforts on new business as Finn’s managing partner of business development.
“She played a key role in attracting key talent to our technology practice as well as other practices and to winning Honeywell, which is an important agency client. She also played a key role in launching our FINNWINN awards program which has contributed significantly to our winning many industry awards,” Finn said.
Over her two-decade career, Brooks also held senior roles at Weber Shandwick, Ketchum and Ogilvy.
In an article for New York-Presbyterian hospital, where she was treated, Brooks said the discovery of her stage-three cancer, called glioblastoma, was "devastating” and “shocking” given there was no history of the disease in her family. Soon after, Brooks became an advocate for brain cancer research and education.
"I never wanted to be part of this tribe they call ‘cancer', nor did I ever imagine being a cancer spokesperson, but it happened, and I've had time to embrace the experience and own it," she wrote. "Cancer doesn't discriminate. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, any time. You don't know when today's research might provide the cure for you or a loved one, so it's in everyone's interest to keep the effort going."
The funeral for Brooks will be held on Wednesday, August 30 at 10:00am at Temple Beth Jacob, located at 290 North Street in Newburgh, New York. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University. Checks should be made payable to Tisch Brain Tumor Center and sent to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710.
