LOS ANGELES —Mattel has handed its corporate PR work in North America to Edelman for a “substantial six-figure” annual budget.

According to industry sources, Edelman has held the account for about three months, ousting incumbent Weber Shandwick. It is understood the decision does not impact Ketchum’s work on Barbie and GolinHarris’ remit on the toymaker’s remaining brands.

While the account is focused on North America, there is the potential for global expansion. Edelman's brief is corporate PR, crisis communications and PR related to Mattel’s children foundation and philanthropy progams.

The account will be led from Edelman’s Los Angeles office, where Mattel - considered the world's largest toymaker -  is based. It was recently reported that Mattel raised $500 million with bonds to refinance outstanding obligations.

Edelman and Mattel declined comment.
