This PR Life is a new series by PRovoke Media where we profile people in and around communications as an industry and find out more about what they do and what makes them tick. Today, we are chatting with Kelly Weber, APAC head of communications at Aquila Clean Energy.
Aquila Clean Energy Asia Pacific (APAC) is a clean energy platform that funds, develops, builds and operates solar PV, wind power and battery energy storage system (BESS) assets across the region.
Weber has been with the company for three years now, joining in 2022 as its senior corporate communications manager.
PRovoke Media: In a nutshell, how would you describe your role in comms to someone who has no idea what it entails?
Kelly Weber (KW): I tell the story of who we are, what we’re doing and why it matters—whether it’s to our team, partners, stakeholders or the broader industry.
PM: Is there anything about your role that your colleagues don’t get?
KW: Nah, I’m fortunate to work with a team that gets communications and understands it’s more than PowerPoint presentations and press releases.
PM: What is the highlight of your job that always puts a smile on your face?
KW: I love any and all video work. I’m very lucky that my colleagues humour me and let me play director for a day. We have fantastic talent in-house which always make filming together a joy, too. I also enjoy when we have the chance to craft content that recognizes our team. It’s very rewarding when people feel seen and appreciated.
PM: Which country do you work in and what is it like working there?
KW: I work in Singapore which is vibrant and multi-cultural. There’s always some kind of event on and it’s easy to network and meet people which means there are many chances to connect and keep up with industry trends and developments. Plus, I’m solar powered so having sunshine most days helps me keep my energy levels up.
PM: What’s the first thing you do when you step into the office to kickstart your day
KW: Say hi to the team and sort out my hydration situation. I usually workout in the morning so that means lots of water first thing and maybe also a tea.
PM: What are three must-have items in your work bag that you can't live without?
KW: My mouse, a notebook and at least three different coloured pens. I feel ready to tackle anything with a mouse and I need the pens to colour-code my notes—I’m a visual person. Recently, I tried the ReMarkable tablet, and it simulates writing on paper so well that I’ll be going paperless once I’ve worked through my current stash of notebooks.
PM: What’s your go-to office lunch that never fails to brighten your day?
KW: A Grain Traders’ salad bowl. It’s got every colour of the rainbow and there’s always a delicious protein choice and loads of veggies. Plus, the team there never fails to brighten my day.
PM: What is it about comms that draws you in and keeps you passionate?
KW: I’ve always valued connecting with people and effective communication underpins all connection. Additionally, they say the sweet spot professionally is to find something that you’re passionate about, that people will pay you for and that you do well. After many years of searching, I’ve found that for me right now, it’s comms. Coming to it mid-career has given me a real drive to keep learning and honing my craft — and that keeps me motivated and engaged.
PM: If you weren’t in comms, what would you be doing?
KW: I’d be a producer for documentaries or for a streaming platform like Netflix. I’m a huge fiction reader, and next to books, some of the best stories being told today are on TV.
PM: What’s the first thing you do to unwind when you clock off for the day?
KW: Plug in a podcast or audiobook and walk my dog. If my partner has already taken her, then I enjoy watching a good show which helps me switch off.
