When LinkedIn CMO Shannon Stubo Brayton left the company at the end of 2019, she ended a nine-year run that saw her emerge as one of the few senior communicators to lead an integrated marketing function. Melissa Selcher, who had been groomed for the role for years, stepped into the highly-watched role this year. Selcher joined LinkedIn in 2016 as VP of communications, before being elevated to leadership of brand, communications and social impact. But soon after Selcher took over, the global pandemic hit and LinkedIn became another tech darling forced to shed jobs, cutting 6% of its workforce because companies are scaling back on their job postings and recruitment services. But according to former CEO Jeff Weiner, Selcher is the person who can handle this moment.

"Under [Selcher's] leadership, we’ve successfully navigated the increasingly complex external environment, protected our reputation and the trust of our stakeholders, and advanced our strategic social impact programs," he said when welcoming her to the role. (Weiner stepped down in February.)

Selcher joined LinkedIn from Cisco, where she spent eight years, rising to the role of chief communications officer. Stubo Brayton, meanwhile, held senior roles at OpenTable, eBay and Yahoo before joining LinkedIn.
