Abey Mokgwatsane has headed up the group marketing function for Anglo-South African banking and wealth management group Investec since October 2021. Amid environmental concerns about South African banks continuing to fund fossil fuel projects, Investec recently announced it will end all coal projects in South Africa by 2030. The UK subsidiary will end all coal financing exposure three years earlier.
Prior to joining Investec, Mokgwatsane was managing executive for brand marketing and communications at Vodacom, Africa’s largest telecommunications provider, where he was managing executive for brand marketing and communications.
Known as a transformative leader, during his time at Vodacom Mokgwatsane helped to enhance the brand’s digital positioning, with a heavy emphasis on purpose—a personal priority. Investec CEO Fani Titi said at the time of Mokgwatsane’s appointment: ‘We look to employ inspirational and entrepreneurial thinkers with a strong social conscience,’ adding that the former CEO of Ogilvy & Mather South Africa embodied these values.
It’s not the first time Mokgwatsane has been in-house: he was also a brand manager at South African Breweries (SAB) and brand group manager for Miller Genuine Draft, widely credited with the successful launch of the brand into the South African market.
