In less than three years at Starbucks, AJ Jones has rapidly moved up the ranks, which included in January of this year being named the coffee giant’s chief corporate affairs officer. The new role included Jones ceding his CCO responsibilities (Dominic Carr now holds that job) but he now has a sweeping remit leading the company's global government affairs and public policy as well as community impact, social impact, Starbucks’ Foundation and Starbucks Alumni functions worldwide.
Jones also helps advance Starbucks expansion in international and emerging markets. Though Starbucks has weathered challenges during his tenure — including charges of union-busting — Jones has succeeded in establishing Starbucks as a leader on DEI issues, rallying his counterparts in other high-profile companies to diversify their communications departments, and requiring the same of agency partners. The company currently is rolling out a new system designed to improve the Starbucks experience for customers and workers alike.
Before joining Starbucks, Jones was chief corporate affairs and communications officer for Vanda Pharmaceuticals and also held several executive roles at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
What are the communications industry's biggest challenges and opportunities in the year ahead?
Future government affairs talent needs. There is a strong need for talent that is strategic, resilient, and adaptable, capable of quickly responding to legislative and regulatory dynamics through a commercially-oriented mindset.
