Allyson Park

Chief Communications Officer
Walmart
US

After an illustrious communications and corporate affairs career that spans senior positions at Yum! Brands and Mars Wrigley, Allyson Park joined retail giant Walmart as its new chief communications officer in July of last year, taking control of a function that covers media relations, external, employee, executive, financial and legal communications, social media content and events.

Park reports to Dan Bartlett, executive vice president of corporate affairs, who has presided over a decade-long transformation of the company’s reputation, and who these days focuses on public policy, and also leads the corporate real estate team that is overseeing the development of Walmart’s new home office.

Park brings a focus on sustainability issues to her role and has also helped Walmart create a more inclusive culture. Most recently, she was chief corporate affairs officer for Yum! Brands, with global responsibility for reputation, stakeholder engagement, environmental and social governance. She also held executive leadership roles at Mars and The Coca-Cola Company, having started her career in consulting in New York and Atlanta.

Can you share a moment in your career when you saw PR's direct impact on business performance?

My first year out of college I was part of Hunter PR, supporting the 100th anniversary of Jell-O. We introduced a new product, with no marketing or advertising support, with great success. Time and time I’ve again I have seen the relevancy and results PR can create for a product, a person, a brand and a company.

What are the communications industry's biggest challenges and opportunities in the year ahead?

I’m seeing four trends – an increasingly complicated stakeholder ecosystem, the disruption of news, the rise of AI and new threat environments – which all will present challenges and opportunities. Companies will need to evolve their communications strategy to help drive increased value in today’s new world.

What have you most admired about the communications industry over the past year?

I’ve admired how the industry continues to change and evolve, appreciated the agility and resilience of those in the industry, and the support that we give to one another.

What work from your team are you most proud of over the past year?

I am honored to lead the world-class communications team at Walmart, and super proud of the work the team is doing to create the next generation of communications, give 1% more every day and reimagine what is possible.

How have you switched off from work and maintained wellness over the past year?

I am a fan of my Oura ring, cheering my kids and husband on in their endeavors, garden any chance I get, and believe in off-the-grid vacations.

If I wasn't working in marketing/communications, I would be...

I already teach as an adjunct professor so it would likely be either a writer/author or running a business.
