WASHINGTON, DC—Spectrum Science Communications has named Larry Thompson as senior vice president, media, with a focus on the firm’s ”science and storytelling” approach. Thompson co-founded The Washington Post’s health section and served as its science editor. He also worked as a broadcast correspondent for Medical News Network and a science policy analyst at the US Food & Drug Administration, communications chief of the Genome Institute and most recently as senior director of communications in Johnson & Johnson’s office of the chief medical officer.

NEW YORK—Global Strategy Group has named Julie Hootkin and Jim Papa as partners. Hootkin, a 10-year GSG veteran, leads the firm’s corporate reputation and public affairs research practice, and also launched and co-leads the corporate impact practice. Papa joined GSG in 2012, and runs the firm’s Washington, DC, office, leading strategy for the public affairs and communications practice in the national capital.

NEW YORK—Porter Novelli has hired Eddie Garrett as executive vice president, global digital strategies. Prior to rejoining the agency, Garrett was executive vice president, head of strategy, at Weber Shandwick. He previously spent three years at Edelman, as an EVP in the consumer marketing practice and a SVP in the digital strategy group. His client experience includes ConAgra Foods, Jim Beam, the IRS, Disney Institute and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

SEATTLE—WE Communications has added Scott Friedman to the agency's technology sector team as executive vice president. Friedman will play an executive leadership role across the Microsoft account, advising clients and setting direction. Most recently, Friedman served as founder and CEO of his own company, The Lede Agency. Before that, he held leadership positions at APCO Worldwide, Text100 and the MSLGroup, working with clients including IBM, Staples, Hitachi, eBay, BlackBerry and CTG.

NEW YORK—5W Public Relations has hired John Ferrari as senior vice president of finance. Previously, Ferrari served as chief financial officer at Hunter Public Relations. Prior to joining Hunter, he was senior vice president of finance at MWW Group and spent 14 years as a member of its financial team.

ST PAUL, MN—Beehive Strategic Communication promoted Ayme Zemke to senior vice president, client service; Maggie Pendleton to account strategist; and hired Sandra Rulff as office administrator. Zemke will continue to lead client service for the agency and support talent development, as well as overseeing corporate and internal communications clients

NEW YORK—Berk Communications, a boutique public relations firm, has hired Marisa Carstens as senior vice president, leading  strategy, portfolio growth and client service functions for the consumer, travel and technology verticals. Prior to joining Berk, Carstens led Text100's consumer practice, overseeing clients including British Airways, Kayak, MTV, Shazam and Surf Air. Previously, she served in corporate communications at American Express and spent five years at Harrison & Shriftman.

NEW ORLEANS—Deveney has named chief financial officer Chris Costello and senior account executive Carrie DeVries as partners a new role at the agency. Costello joined the agency full time in 2005 and as CFO, he leads overall agency operations. DeVries joined the firm in 2012 and leads the agency’s lifestyle practice area (tourism, travel and hospitality).
