LONDON — FTI Consulting has appointed former Teneo principal Graham McMillan as a senior adviser in its Strategic Communications segment, with a focus on expanding the consultancy’s sustainability and responsible business offering.

McMillan was at Teneo in London for six years, covering responsible business, sustainability, ESG, public policy and political risk in the UK, EU and internationally for clients including National Grid, AstraZeneca, BHP, Dow and Kingfisher.

Before joining Teneo, McMillan was CEO and co-founder of Open Road, which specialised in responsible and sustainable business, public affairs and corporate communications. He sold Open Road to Blue Rubicon in 2014; Blue Rubicon was acquired by Teneo in 2015.

John Waples, EMEA vice chairman and head of strategic communications in the UK at FTI Consulting, said: “Responsible business and sustainability are both crucial themes that are central to corporate strategy, and Graham’s appointment reinforces FTI Consulting’s commitment to providing our clients with comprehensive counsel on these matters. Graham has built a strong reputation in this space, and we look forward to our clients benefiting directly from his expertise and experience.”

McMillan added: “Businesses face enormous challenges as they seek to reinvent themselves to address profitably the problems of people and planet in a way that makes them more successful and resilient. This is incredibly hard to do, but even more important against the backdrop of a global pandemic, the rise of populism, rising inequality and the environmental crisis. Businesses needs to move towards being net positive for climate, nature and society to play their part in addressing these huge challenges, but in doing so there are challenges and pitfalls as well as enormous opportunities.

“I look forward to working with FTI Consulting’s team to do what I can to help clients navigate this landscape in which the economy and business will have to transform in the years to come towards net zero, nature positive and greater corporate purpose.”

McMillan’s appointment follows that of Rory Cellan-Jones, previously the BBC's technology correspondent, who joined FTI Consulting in early January to advise telecommunications, media and technology clients.
