A former adman with experience of working in some of the world’s biggest firms, SY Lau was elevated earlier this year to oversee all marketing and advertising at Tencent, the Chinese online giant behind the hugely popular WeChat mobile messaging platform. The explosion of China’s internet scene has seen Lau become an influential global figure, and he has become a high-profile advocate for the use of technology in marketing, pointing to Tencent’s own innovation in such areas as sports coverage and data personalization. Lau joined Tencent in 2006 and now oversees Tencent's marketing offer to brands, one that has become particularly appealing with the seemingly unstoppable rise of WeChat.
